The altar and the ambos
The brasswork in the choir does not belong only to the past. The altar, made in 1992, and the two ambos, made in 2006, show that this art continues in Dinant today.
Look at the altar. Faces emerge from the hammered brass: the Virgin and Saints Perpetuus, Peter and Nicholas, patrons of the town and its neighbourhoods. Around them, grooves in the metal evoke the waters of the Meuse and the rocks surrounding Dinant. The work was designed by Marie-Jeanne François and produced with students from the Institut technique d’Herbuchenne.
The two ambos are the work of brassworker Frédéric Favero. On the left, Christ wraps the collegiate church in his cloak, while twelve fish, symbolising the apostles, swim in the waters of the Meuse. On the right, the Virgin and Child are surrounded by the town’s three patron saints.
Resolutely contemporary works, yet deeply rooted in the history and landscape of Dinant.
