Christ rising from the tomb
Like the Coronation of the Virgin, this medieval sculpture once adorned the south porch of the collegiate church. It was later moved indoors for protection and has recently been restored by KIK-IRPA.
The scene represents the Resurrection of Christ. Christ rises from the tomb. At his feet, the sleeping guards can still be made out. Despite the damage to the sculpture, the essential scene remains clearly legible.
In the Middle Ages, the Resurrection was often evoked indirectly, through the Holy Women discovering the empty tomb. Here, the artist chose to show Christ directly, triumphant over death.
Its present location near the baptismal font therefore takes on its full meaning: in Christian tradition, baptism is also a passage from death to life, a participation in the resurrection of Christ.
