The portal of the former baptistery
You are standing before a door… that no longer leads anywhere. In the 13th century, this large blocked-up portal was one of the entrances to the collegiate church, while the nave was still under construction. In the 14th century, a new entrance was created and the old porch became a baptistery.
Fortunately, the portal has preserved its rich sculpted decoration. Look at the three rows of small figures following the curve of the arch: prophets and kings of the Old Testament form a veritable heavenly court. Some can still be recognised. On the left, look for David playing the harp and, just above him, Moses carrying the Tablets of the Law. A little further on, John the Baptist, with his long beard and staff, announces the coming of Christ. At the centre, two images dominate the whole: the Lamb of God and the Coronation of the Virgin.
